Callan Method

Most of our students come to us specifically to improve their speaking and listening skills and we help them to do this by using the Callan Method (see below for further details). BSGS is an accredited Callan Method school.  We provide experienced and friendly teachers. Moreover, our prices are very competitive! Some of the benefits we offer are:

  • Free level test and trial lesson - no appointment needed, just visit us!

  • Part-time or full-time English courses.

  • Morning, afternoon and evening classes (Mon to Fri; closed on Saturday/Sunday)

  • Flexible schedule (students can change hours any time according to their work rotas or personal commitments)

  • Books are £12.50 per stage (each stage takes 4-6 weeks to complete and there are 12 stages/levels in total)

  • No registration fee!

  • Minimum enrolment age is 18.

  • Each class consists of 2 lessons of 50 minutes with a 10 minute break in the middle, giving a total of 100 minutes of lesson time. For example, during the 11:05 class, the class begins with Lesson 1 at 11:05 and finishes at 11:55. The break begins at 11:55 and finishes at 12:05. Lesson 2 starts at 12:05 and finishes at 12:55.

  • Each class lasts for a total duration of 1 hour and 40 minutes (plus a 10 minute break in the middle).

  • 1 class per day, 5 days per week for 4 weeks, equals 33.33 hours of total class time.

  • 1 class per day, 5 days per week for 12 weeks, equals 100 hours of total class time.

  • 1 class per day, 5 days per week for 24 weeks, equals 200 hours of total class time.

  • The maximum class size is 14 students, although usually it is much smaller.

  • The school is closed on Bank Holidays and all public, national holidays (although these days may be recouped later by students).

  • BSGS is also closed for approximately 2 weeks over the Christmas period.  Again, these days may be recouped by students at the end of their course.

About the Callan Method

The Callan Method is a carefully designed form of direct method which focuses on listening and speaking.  It teaches language as a reflex and encourages students to think in English, without translating. There is a lot of repeating in order to help students memorise vocabulary and grammar.

Callan classes are delivered by the teacher asking students specific questions from the relevant Callan book (Stage 1-12).

The student must answer according to the given answers in the book and is helped by the teacher. Typically, the method makes the student give full sentence answers, often starting with the negative sentence first, followed by the positive e.g.

Question: “Is the pen in the book?”

Answer: “No, the pen isn’t in the book, it’s under the book.”

Notice also that the method generally uses contractions wherever possible as is common in spoken English (it is > it’s).

Another important aspect of the method is correction – the teacher will correct all the mistakes made by the student immediately, whether with pronunciation or grammar.

There is a lot of revision and repetition involved in the method and it is done systematically where words and grammatical items reappear in different contexts as the student progresses through the different stages of the course. It is not important for the student to understand all the questions and answers straight away as the material gets revised several times, so each time it gets easier and easier to understand. This is the natural way to learn a language.
