IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System and is an examination developed by Cambridge University and used internationally by universities and colleges to assess a student's suitability for higher education studies such as undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It is especially in demand by international students who are interested in enrolling on a university programme in England.
There are four papers in the exam:
- Listening – 40 questions (30 minutes, plus 10 minutes’ transfer time)
- Reading – 40 questions (60 minutes)
- Writing – 2 tasks (60 minutes)
- Speaking – 3 parts (11-14 minutes)
There are two different IELTS modules: Academic and General Training. The Speaking and Listening tests are the same in both modules, but the Reading and Writing tests are different. The Academic module is suitable if you wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, or if you are seeking professional registration, e.g. doctors and nurses.
At the end of the exam there is no pass or fail but instead you will get an overall score from 1 (lowest) to 9 (highest). Most universities accept a score of 6 or 6.5 as a prerequisite for their courses if the student is from a non-English speaking country.
